The story

Started from scratch.

How Jonathan Gonzalez built Absolute, retold from a sit-down interview with him.

  1. Twenty years in the trade

Jonathan has more than 20 years in plumbing, including about five at Rescue Rooter in Sylmar. California requires at least four years of experience before you can hold your own plumbing license. He got licensed in 2014 and started Absolute from scratch with one truck.

  2. Why “Absolute”

The name works three ways. The first three letters are ABS — the plastic pipe plumbers run every day. Drop the A and the B and what’s left sounds like “salute,” a nod to his wife, who is a police officer. And “absolutely” has always been Jonathan’s word. The trucks are blue because plumbers deal with water all day.

  3. The first customers

They came from three places: local law enforcement, through his wife; the shop and business owners he used to service at Rescue Rooter, who told him, “If you ever go somewhere else, give me your number”; and friends in construction, who always need a plumber.

  4. Small on purpose

As the calls grew, so did the crew: a second truck, then a third and a fourth. But Jonathan keeps Absolute deliberately small, on advice from his Rescue Rooter mentor, Rudy Rios, so he stays close to every job and hires only the right plumbers. Vendors come in once a month to train the crew.

  5. Why plumbing

Plumbing is a necessity — when you have a leak, you need it fixed now. Plumbers are on call 24/7, and no two jobs are the same. And nobody wants a cold shower: when the water heater goes out, people need hot water today.

“You don’t have a famous electrician. You don’t have a famous HVAC guy. We have the Mario Brothers — and they’re plumbers.”
